The Patio Process
Initially we begin by excavating the area roughly about 1 foot in depth either by machine or by hand. We then load the area with 21AA, crushed limestone. The depth of the base ultimately depends on the soil but is typically 5-8 inches which is compacted multiple times until it resolves a cement like base. We then use slag sand for leveling which is thicker than regular sand so it does not wash away. This is also compacted multiple times until it does not compact anymore. The brick is then laid and cuts are made to fulfill the design. We can then apply a polymeric sand to the seams and gaps which is optional but extremely recommended. After being swept in we then wet it which activates the glue and cement that is mixed in the sand so it hardens to a cement like texture. This prevents dirt and weeds from later filling those cracks. Pictured below are some before and after pictures as well as patios under construction.
